#2David Rader August 17, 2008 @ 2:51 PM
While it may not be a special character, the dollar sign can make a pretty cool S.
#4Ty Anderton September 17, 2008 @ 12:23 AM
251 named check mark is actually the square root symbol but it can be used as a check
#5Haxor February 19, 2009 @ 6:54 AM
man, ive been using the ascii leters forever and kept them secret so i'd be one of the few with the "§i|e//Ce"
#6RowSkin February 23, 2009 @ 5:39 PM
I hate it when people, especially weemos, type in ascii. Like Haxor just did.
#7CR Randlewood February 26, 2009 @ 12:56 PM
How come when I type Alt-234 I get Û and not the symbol for Omega? Something changed and I am not sure why. Can someone enlighten me please?
#8David Rader February 26, 2009 @ 11:27 PM
Randlewood, I wonder if maybe the language settings on your computer are different than standard... E.g. English or English International... I assume it has this problem not only in the browser correct? Otherwise it's browser specific.
#9Lennie March 25, 2009 @ 11:07 AM

#11Scooter8511 June 18, 2009 @ 3:59 AM
wow...sorry about that last post...is it possible for someone to delete that? i don't know how...
it should look like this:
special characters!!!
this is a very LARGE list...
i tested all of these that are listed personally...
it took a long time...PLEASE enjoy...
to use: hold down the "alt" key, then type in the number
indicated before the = sign next to your selected character
via the "numpad" (MUST use the num pad, num lock does not
have to be on for this to work...)
that is all i tried...hope this is at all useful...

#17maersk September 30, 2009 @ 9:54 PM
To Kojack - Not all fonts can produce these symbols. Can you try others? That has worked for me.... Good luck!

Hi, I'm looking for the heart ascii so I can include in my sms messages and email footer. From your website I can only see the heart appearing as "square". Is it that my mobile phone is unable to discipher the character?
Also I would like to introduce to you the star character.. ?
Found it in my sms messages and copied to the web! Enjoy =D

#22David Rader December 17, 2009 @ 6:31 PM
It is most likely your phone unable to view the smiley face. Many phones will turn common faces like (without the spaces) : ) and < 3 into smiley faces... :) and <3
But windows does not. Many instant messengers do though. ♥ For PC, just ALT+3=♥ Heart
#23fuceye December 27, 2009 @ 10:07 AM

#26clmoz February 13, 2010 @ 12:31 PM
how can I make the \"peace\" sign? The \"alt 9774 does not work. I got a \"dot\" the first time and a \"quarter note\" the second time. Why is that?
#27naliorf February 26, 2010 @ 12:33 PM
Lily - it's a geographical thing. In the US the symbol "#" is referred to generically as the "pound sign". Or it can be the symbol for "number" in a numbered list, as in #1, #2, #3 etc. It's also used as a symbol for a measure of weight as in 1 pound would be denoted 1#
It's different in the UK because pounds are currency for you.
#28nikkie April 08, 2010 @ 8:13 AM
it's not workng for me.. can anyone help me.. I would just like the music quarter note... alt+14 then nothing happens..

#31JohnR August 08, 2010 @ 4:45 PM
Good tables. I have been using them for many years as that was the only way to program (way back then) with codes similar to Chr$(67)&Chr$(97)&Chr$(116) which was the ONLY way to place the word "Cat" on a monitor screen's form!
As to those of you having issues when you try it, please notice how many times posters have said that it depends on what font you are using. First try it with a "standard" font like Arial, Courier or Times New Roman. Then change it to whatever font you like. That way you will know if it's your font choice that is creating an issue.
Some of you (Amanda, etc.) asked for characters that are provided by special fonts such as Wingdings or Webdings. Those CHANGE the result of a standard character into the symbols you asked about.
Personally, I would like to thank the creator of this site as I am certain that many have and will benefit from these tables that are getting increasingly less obtainable.
#32MariaW August 11, 2010 @ 12:05 PM
Anyone know the ASCII code for a raised SM? Stands for Service Mark, like ™ stands for Trade Mark.
And THANK YOU for this site. I am a Lotus Notes user and this has made my life a world easier!!
#34K Tracy August 26, 2010 @ 10:58 PM
Hi! Thanks for this list - very helpful.
Alt+13 and Alt+14 are not quarter notes - they are eighth notes. Could you correct those please? Thanks.
#35David R. August 27, 2010 @ 12:32 AM
Thanks K Tracy! Someone emailed me about that a while back and I meant to change it. Thank you and s/he!
#36kathryn September 01, 2010 @ 10:04 PM
I've used your ascii codes for other symboles, but for some reason he "less than or equal to" and "greater than or equal to" (ie 242 and 243) do not work on my computer. Any thoughts why?
#37David September 03, 2010 @ 11:59 PM
If you can see the greater than or equal to codes on your computer, but can't type them, it's likely because the font your using doesn't support it. Try switching to Times New Roman font ≥ ≤
If that doesn't work, what program are you using... Adobe? Are you using Windows?
#38Barb September 05, 2010 @ 9:22 AM
This is a very useful site. I found a link here from Yahoo Answers. Did not realize the number keyboard could do so much.
#39sahil September 05, 2010 @ 2:36 PM
is ther any method to use ascii char by mobile kepad....and thanx for above table..
#40Dianna October 17, 2010 @ 2:27 PM
Would anyone know if there is a code for this? ⃞ I need to use it in a google docs spreadsheet and it won't copy paste for me.
#41David R. October 17, 2010 @ 5:26 PM
@Dianna There may be a way to make that box that I'm not aware of- but many times that box only shows up when it's supposed to be something else... Perhaps changing the font a few times for that one character may do the trick. Some fonts produce nothing at all though for characters they don't support.
Also... I accidentally deleted your other comment when I meant to approve it! Here are your answers:
The ascii codes for fractions are this:
0189 = ½ One half
0188 = ¼ One quarter
0190 = ¾ Three quartes
Hold ALT on the numpad and press those numbers, then release alt.. Hope that helps!

I had found that ascii has an unlimited number of keystrokes and not confined to just 255 characters. Some of my characters havent ever been seen before. And arent on your list of usual ones.
#53djtremolo November 20, 2011 @ 8:01 AM
@se7ven, wow, that's gotta be the biggest list of special characters I've ever seen o_O. My web site is actually decorated with ASCII inspired stuff. F≡ÐuP╚╩╝¡┬╠╣.∩≡┬ . Anyway, this is very useful list all and all.
#54Shaun November 30, 2011 @ 11:00 PM
These symbols and codes will only work with Windows

Mr green, that's UTF, which INCLUDES the ASCII-set.
#57guestling January 06, 2012 @ 7:29 AM
I like it. Good work. ASCII 255 is actually white space or whitespace, not space (ASCII 32).
