FTW Meaning

By: David Rader II on March 10, 2008 @ 3:58 AM

Many people online say FTW, but when I've asked them what it means, it's VERY rare to get the same answer twice in a row.

Here's what I've found so far...

For the wind! (heard from Bob)
For the win! (heard from many)
Fuck the world! (many)
Fuck the whore! (heard from Carl)
For the world! (many)

Unlike most internet slang, like lol, brb, or rofl, "FTW" doesn't always mean the same thing. One person will say it, another will say YEAH! Not realizing that the other person meant something completely different, but assuming that they think it means the same thing.

What does FTW mean to you? If it doesn't mean anything yet, pick something, make something up, or just know now what it *might* mean when someone says it, lol...

I'll tell you what it means to me too:
To me, it means for the wind! Because it sticks in my memory well, specifically because I haven't been able to make much sense of it.

Profanity isn't my favorite, but if it's for educational purposes, I wont beat myself up over it or consider it "excessive."

I always thought it meant "For the Win!" I hope the "F" does not mean a bad word. I am Not Allowed to say (or type) bad words. Maybe when I turn 5 I can.

Huh. I haven't noticed "FTW" at all online, but my guess would have been:
- profanity for the F
- "free" for the F

I'd still have been clueless about the whole phrase, however. :o) I got curious after reading your post, and I found two pages of definitions the phrase online at this URL:

My interpretation of the acronym....FTW....>>> Face the Wall....when I play online games and am interrupted by an outside occurrence, I face a wall, away from the action which indicates that I am not in-game. Peeps that are familiar with this will respect you, and not kill you...usually :)

lol! See what I mean! It's a "poopular" acronym on the internet, and most of the time when someone says it, someone interprets it as something else... Which is unique to FTW, since most other acronyms are assumed for the right meaning... How many people think LOL means something different than laugh out loud? or BRB to mean be right back? FTW!

I forgot about that one A unique being, being a pro gamer, I should have remembered face the wall! lol!

thanks for that link Carolyn! i hadn't thought about FREE before... FREE THE WORLD!! I noticed that link said Free the whales, I prefer free the world! That's schaweet!

I wouldn't think you meant it as a bad word Daisy, so I think no one else should either!

It's kind of nice in a way, since FTW kind of gets people riled up for something excited, so if you say it, they interpret it whatever way riles them up the most! SCHAWEET!!! When I'm running for president, at the end of my biggest speech I'll say,

FTW AMERICA!!!

Since you, my friends were here first and I want you to know me as best as possible, just know that I don't mean it in the profane way! I mean, FOR THE WORLD!!!!!

#5 Qelqoth March 15, 2008 @ 1:13 PM
It's normally used among teenage gamers more than anything else although I use it myself in a sarcastic context. There is more than one meaning behind the acronym although its most common usage is, "for teh win" (typo intentional).

it is my understanding it came from the vietnam era, when our boys were in the nam they called home the world, but when then came home to the world, they were taunted, called baby killers,so on.so when they returned to the nam, they were asked about the world, hence fuck the world F.T.W.

Back when I was your age, during the Viet Nam mess, it stood for Fuck the War. I think that has now become For the Win. (Though I really like Free the Whales the most.)

#15 Anonymous April 05, 2011 @ 8:11 PM
I thought it meant F**** the World, but then I thought it was For the Win. I think of it as both now, depending on how people say it.

#16 Matt April 14, 2011 @ 11:45 PM
In my own way I use it when a hack causes someone to win so fuck the winner.

#17 john August 04, 2011 @ 7:46 PM

#19 aarnie February 27, 2012 @ 3:05 PM
erm it's wtf spelld backwards!

#20 Billiamian March 02, 2012 @ 3:48 AM
Much like folks will say "gosh" instead of "god", "darn" instead of "damn", "geez" instead of "Jesus" - to not blaspheme, or "shoot" instead of "shit", etc., I've always read FTW as "Fut The Whuck?" - swapping the initial phonemes. The English language continues to devolve...

#21 Steve March 02, 2012 @ 3:06 PM
It ca also mean forever two wheels

#22 Joelle April 01, 2012 @ 3:22 PM
I have only ever heard FTW being used as "for the win." I would say that's the most common use.

#23 1998luigi1 April 04, 2012 @ 10:05 PM
I always thought it meant "fuck the what" which makes no sense, I finally decided to look it up and I think I'm going to go with either fuck the world or for the wind

#24 stageon April 08, 2012 @ 4:25 AM
"For Great Justice!!!" ...seriously though, everyone I game with uses it to mean "For The Win".

#25 tat2 April 23, 2012 @ 1:35 AM
It means lotta things originated fom nam like dude said earlier but i say fuk the world or forever truely white

#26 Shuga Cube May 09, 2012 @ 3:12 PM
I originally thought it was 'fuck the what' as a piss take from wtf... But this is why I googled the meaning & now there are so many options to choose from! I can remember when lol started and it was lots of laughs, lots of love or laugh out loud. I guess the most popular translation won over time.

#27 kat12364 December 10, 2012 @ 8:35 PM
I say it means fight to win or for the win but i guess if you anger fuck the world works for you!! But i choose fight to win

#28 jaime GRANDE January 25, 2013 @ 2:01 AM
Means FUCK THE WORLD. A punk acronym used originally (I believe) in Los Angeles in the Seventies which was a derivation from the original FTA which means Fuck the Army.

#29 Mandy March 12, 2013 @ 5:28 PM
