Dundalk Hawk

By: David Rader II on February 05, 2008 @ 10:47 PM

I've lived in Dundalk, Maryland (USA) for over 20 years now and I don't ever remember any hawks. I also don't remember ever seeing a live hawk on top of a PT Cruiser before either.

Today my wife, Dawn Rader saw a hawk (which she said looked like it was eating a brown pigeon) on top of a PT Cruiser as you can see in the pictures she took.

Colors: Light Brown, Dark Brown, White, Solid Black Eyes

I found it really odd to see a Hawk in Dundalk, MD, because it's a suburban area, but there are a lot of birds around here still (and not just pigeons). It does seem as though the hawk was carrying a pigeon and when it flew away I saw a 3rd (developed - not fluffy) wing drop from the brown mass the hawk was carrying. I'm not sure what kind of hawk this is, in fact I'm not a hundred percent sure that's what it is, a hawk, but I'm pretty sure.

If you think you know what kind of bird this is, please let us know!

Have no idea. But I think it's pretty cool to spot a hawk so close.

Great picture. That's one nasty (yet elegant) looking hawk!

ps: you've been tagged for a meme. Please see my latest post. :-)

Wonderful. I do believe that is a hawk of some kind. I am leaning more toward falcon of some breed.

And, I do also believe it is rare to see such an animal in Dundalk.

Fantastic photo!

Probably a Cooper's hawk. They're on the rebound all over (plenty of pigeons to hunt!)

Looks like a female Cooper's Hawk (looks BIG). There was another urban sighting few days back. They prey on smaller birds. Nice photo!

My wife just spotted it again a few days ago. She took another picture, but the bird was out of range for our camera. It may have been a different hawk... We see it every once in a while now though. There may even be two of them flying around here.

OOH Yeah, one flew into a glass building a few months ago, my wife and I walked by it. It was standing, very shaken. It stood in one spot with a dead pigeon laying next to it for more than 20 minutes. Eventually it gathered itself and took off. A crowd of people were standing around it though. It was pretty amazing... I wish I had the camera, but someone took a photo of it with their cell phone.

Cool man, share a link to it on here if you like! I'd like to check it out too.

Has that Hawk been there for long Alan? The one near here stopped showing up... But then again... Possibly the same one ran into a glass window chasing a pigeon or with a pigeon in its grasp...

I walked up on it and it was stunned, it stood still for about 15-30 mins. Someone said it had flew into the window... A pigeon lay dead a foot or two from it... When it finally shook off its daze, it even left the dead pigeon and just flew away.

I'm not sure if that was the same Hawk or not, but I haven't seen them around here much since then. Maybe it later died of a concussion or just decided suburban life wasn't for it.

Hi, yes, very late to the group but stumbled upon picture. I have to say, WOW! I have been fortunate enough to get close enough to the hawks in Harford county to get some great shots also. This one looks similar to the ones I've taken pictures of...the Red Shouldered Hawk. Beautiful animal.

It may be a peregrine falcon. In 1980 the Interior Department in D.C., started raising peregrine falcons on the roof (the like high places) to control the pigeon population. Then I heard Baltimore had started raising them too on top of tall buildings for the same reason (pigeon control). It's possible, after all this time that some of them have moved to Dundalk. There was a camera on the roof that we could watch in the lobby as the mother bird came back and forth feeding the babies. I didn't follow the project in Baltimore as closely but was aware they were doing this too.

Here's the latest article on Baltimore's peregrine falcons:

Peregrine falcons thrive in Baltimore
By Frank D. Roylance, The Baltimore Sun | June 9, 2010
Thirty-three years after an endangered peregrine falcon named Scarlett was released from her breeding facility and raised foster chicks and later her own hatchlings on a 33rd-floor ledge of a Baltimore skyscraper, the bird's heirs are still bringing more peregrines into the world. The latest young falcon, or eyas, hatched earlier this spring and is expected to test her wings next month. She is the youngest in a nearly unbroken succession of close to 100 young peregrines to fledge from the same aerie on the former USF&G and later Legg Mason tower, at 100 Light St. Craig Koppie, a raptor biologist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, is keeping watch over the family.

I saw one of these in my backyard today! It was odd though cause when I first saw it I only saw it from the back. It sat about a foot or so tall and it had a smooth grey back just like the doves I always see on the power lines. When I grabbed my camera it turned and looked at me and I was able to catch a pic of it,it had very long claws and a hooked beak. When I snapped the pic it flew over to a piece of wood in the back and I was able to see the breast of it which was white and tan almost like a checkerboard pattern and in his claw he was holding a a dove. I have pics of him on my fb page. I looked up Peregrine Falcon and it looks similar however the pics I see show a pattern in the feathers and back of the falcon and this was definitely a smooth solid grey back on the bird I saw today.

I saw a Cooper Hawk sitting in a tree in my yard on June 2, 2012. Very beautiful bird.

Sharp shinned hawk. They frequent backyard bird feeders.
